I'm DEFINITELY right...

by bloglikesit @ 28/02/2008 - 11:41:31

I just had an argument in the office. About spelling.

Everyone else, and I mean everyone*, is convinced the word 'definitely' is spelled 'definately'. I want to eat my head.

I showed them the many entries on dictionary.com, the Hungarian lady translated it and couldn't find a word for their spelling, I pointed out that the word is related to definite and finite, and they still insist that their way is the right way, and my way is the American way.

Fools!

* Except the Hungarian lady.

I did, and I'm fighting the urge to edit the comment and correct it.

You are most certainly correct. It is a pretty commonly misspelled word though.

It all came about when the Hungarian lady asked what it meant, and asked for the spelling so she could look it up. I started to spell it out and everyone went "no, it's an A!"

As if! I did doubt myself for a few seconds but no, damn it, I'm right!

With the vehemence of my reaction, I fear that I have now blown my cover and my co-workers know what a grammar and spelling Nazi I am.

Mental note, do not claim to be a grammar and spelling Nazi in Berlin. And don't mention the war!

You started it!

It's good to let everyone know where you stand on correctness.

Only problem is that when you make a mistake, even just a typo, the ignorant masses will pounch triumphantly.

War? What war? Germans are lovely! :))

And they might even pounce too!

They are morons - you are correct.

There is only one correct spelling for that word, and you are using it.

If not for Rampage, I'd blame it on them being Irish.

That's OK, nothing like a bit of Irish-bashing, they are mostly ignorant oiks after all. :)

I'm just going to use it in every single email I send anyone from the office for a few days. Hopefully it will sink in.

Oh! I SO much understand how you feel! Nobody can spell any more: the journalists I used to deal with in PR (BC, Before Children) always mispelt the most common terms (definitely/definately, compatible/compatable, receive/recieve, their/there, hear/here, plurals with apostrophes, etc) and then told me to shut up as "you are a foreigner". The thing is, as foreigners we learn how to spell properly.

Well, hopefully that link I just emailed them will convince them!
